Out of boredom, i went into newegg and built myself a pretty decent computer:

basic sli-ready mobo
q6600 processor (the bottleneck in my little scheme)
4 x 2GB RAM pc 800 (240-pin ddr2 800mhz)
2 x 8800gtx ultra 768mb 384-bit cards
700w OCZ psu
2 x 500GB hard drives
24" widescreen monitor, 1920 x 1200 native res, which btw i didnt know they made 4000:1 contrast ratio
and to top it off, another logitech x518 mouse ftw. i use to be all about the mx1000s, but something about the wireless system pisses me off after using wired mice again.

altogether, $2655.77

i was planning on using my old watercooling case, but all the heat this will produce scares me. might have to get a new wc case.

i hope they come down on processor prices so i can get a core 2 extreme. I plan on buying this monster if i love AOC when it comes out and make sure i have enough time to invest in owning on it.

Looks good, but you probably want to make sure you have a 1000W PSU with at least 60A (70A would be preferred for power fluctuations) on the 12V rails if you plan to run 2 8800gtx's in SLI

a 24" monitor is wasting 2 8800Ultras.

Go 30!

Yup, 18 x 4 on the 12v rails so 72amps on those bad boys.

as for the monitor....im used to my 15.1" laptop monitor, when i get on my desktop to play team fortress 2 or css, that things pretty damn big haha. 24" would be overkill, 30" would get me an uncomfortable boner.

I need to get ready to build a new machine once I get mo' paychecks. Though I'll need some help deciding when to order it (so I don't get too scrood on new technology rolling out the next day) I'm pretty worried about my monitor situation. I love my dual screens (even though one is an older CRT, the other being a decent 17'' LCD I got for high school graduation years ago), just because it comes in handy so damn much it seems. One screen is the game, the other is a parse, IMs, music, blah blah blah. But getting a widescreen would be nice, since the only "widescreen" I had was on my old dell laptop :p I guess I could just get a widescreen and see how I like it. If I want more, I can throw my current 17'' LCD on the side? Though that'd be a weird resolution...

/blah-blah-blah off

Actually, my Newegg wishlist looks really similar. Though I'd probably be getting 1x 500gb HD and 1x 8800GTX.

What's the CPU situation nowwa days? I know the AMD has something called the Spider planned, but I really haven't kept up with comp technology lately being so busy. I'm not a fanboy of any product really, I could go AMD, Intel, nVidia, ATI, whatever has the best bang for the buck (and new tech that'll last a while).

** Damnit, I was planning on making a post about this at Silky Venom's tech section but my work has it blocked it. Lame. Same with my site, apparently it's too awesome or something.

Okay, second post in a row but I don't care :p

I read up on the new AMD product line at Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/19/the_spider_weaves_its_web/index.html). 42 page review, pretty lengthy. It seems their current product line up can't match up to Intel's high-end, but the value for your dollar is about the same. They're offering some new high-end stuff in 2008, but we'll have to see what the benchmarks are then. What is nice is that I could buy a decent AM2 board (or spider board, not that I would ever use 4 video cards...) and not worry about having to buying a new mobo whenever I want to upgrade the CPU.

Seeing as how I have time, I guess I'll be giving AMD and Intel some time also :p
