About Rift: Planes of Telara
http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/about-thumb1.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/about-litebox1.jpg) Join legions of adventurers in Rift: Planes of Telara, a new fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in a world being torn apart.
Rifts violently rip into reality across the land and release powerful forces that threaten the very existence of Telara. Each breach brings with it new characters, events, and treasures, while the world itself changes dynamically around you.
Play with your friends across vast, lavishly detailed environments, or go head-to-head in challenging Player versus Player (PvP) combat as you battle to uncover the secrets of the planes. Build and advance your character using an innovative new class system with limitless possibilities.
The rifts have divided the people and endanger the world. Whether you fight to seal the rifts forever, or harness their power for your own, epic adventures lie ahead for those willing to fight for the future of Telara.

Key Features
Rifts of Telara: A devastating magical eruption has tattered the veil between Telara and other planar dimensions. Treacherous and powerful rifts occur when two planes intersect, allowing passage between dimensions. Now no part of Telara is truly safe from invasion by otherworldly forces that lie beyond.
Unique Class System: Collect and embrace the souls of Telara’s ancient champions to gain their unique powers and abilities. Shape and progress your character with Rift's unique class system as you see fit, with hundreds of possible combinations.
Dynamic Layered Content: Telara pulses with activity. Thousands of unexpected encounters - from wandering merchants to explosive rifts that unleash massive planar invasions - create an unparalleled experience that goes beyond static quests and story arcs. Rift's dynamic layered content redefines the meaning of a living, breathing world.
Next-Gen Graphics: Stunning visuals by world-renowned fantasy artists bring unique creatures and conceptual designs to life. Next-generation lighting and intensely detailed characters and monsters set Rift apart from any other MMO on the market.
Plane Touched: Telara's proximity to a nexus of the planes shapes your adventures, your enemies, and even you. The rifts grant magical abilities to those bold enough to seize them, and rumors abound that some have crossed over to other planes and come back changed.
Player Factions
In the final days of the Mathosian civil war, the Ward that protected Telara from planar convergence was severely weakened by a disaster known as the Shade. Since that time, rifts between Telara and the planes have been increasingly devastating the land, and old enemies held at bay by elemental prisons have begun actively clawing their way out.
Telara’s greatest enemy, the death god Regulos, pounds against the outside of the Ward, seeking re-entry into Telara to finish the job he once started. Meanwhile, Telara’s own pantheon of gods has suddenly grown silent, and the world is descending into total chaos.
The people of Telara are now convinced that the end of the world is at hand. In these desperate final days, two major factions have arisen to battle the coming apocalypse: the Guardians and the Defiant. Though each faction wants to save the world, their beliefs and methods differ, and they war upon each other as often as they do other enemies of Telara.
The Guardians
Guardians are the chosen of the Telara's gods, the Vigil. When the tyrant Aedraxis called forth the power of the Plane of Death and devastated Telara, the Vigil chose the most powerful souls taken by the Shade to be the archons of the next age. A golden age awaits, but Telara must first be saved — by deed, by example, or by the sword. Its people must be redeemed, its corruptors cleansed. Only then will the Guardians be imbued with the divine and ascend to a higher level.
http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/guardian/conceptThumb1.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/guardian/litebox1.jpg)http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/guardian/conceptThumb2.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/guardian/litebox2.jpg)
The Vigil chose the Guardians from the three races of Telara who most put their faith in the gods, including the fearless Mathosians and the wise High Elves. Though each race is beloved of the gods, each seeks redemption for the sins of their leaders: Aedraxis Mathos unleashed the Shade, and Prince Hylas broke the Elves' ancient covenant with the gods. Thus, the Guardians represent both the hopes of the world and of their fallen peoples.
Within their holy city of Sanctum, the Guardians stand as bold sentinels against the dragons and their cults. Their crusades assault the undead armies of Regulos, their inquisitions purge the secretive cults of Akylios, and their agents search for sinister signs as far away as the deserts of Shimmersand. The Vigil does not dictate a single path to salvation, so the Guardians seek their own place in the holy litany by ending the corruption of the dragons and the blasphemy of the Defiants.
The Guardians are driven forward by the memory of Telara's countless fallen innocents, who cried out for salvation as the world was shattered, only to be consumed by the Destroyer. This, the Vigil reminds them, is what the Guardians must strive against, lest millions more meet the torment of oblivion in Regulos's jaws. Only the light of the Guardians stands before such all-consuming darkness.
The Defiant
The Defiant do not care whether the gods abandoned the world or not. To them, this entire planar convergence disaster is the gods' fault in the first place. Indeed, as soon as things went from bad to worse, the gods suddenly and inexplicably disappeared.
So while the Guardians run around Telara building temples, sticking their noses in everyone's business, and desperately praying for a miracle, the Defiant plan on actually delivering one, even if it means being branded as heretics and operating outside the laws of the land.
http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/defiant/conceptThumb1.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/defiant/litebox1.jpg)http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/defiant/conceptThumb2.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/img/game/factions/defiant/litebox2.jpg)
Above all else, Defiants are rugged individualists who love technology. Mixing technology with magic offers amazing opportunities for innovation, personal power, and cultural progress. If used correctly, these advancements could also be turned into spectacular weapons to fight the looming darkness. The Defiant absolutely believe that the best defense is a great offense - something the Guardians will never understand.
With the help of enough eldritch war machines and magical innovations, Defiants believe the people of Telara will have the power to destroy the dragon gods themselves, without needing to rely on outdated religious dogma. When Telara is saved, the Defiant will be at the head of a new technomagic age, in which every facet of life is touched by their innovations.
While some Defiants might reluctantly acknowledge that their methods are dangerous, potentially posing risks to the integrity of the world, they will be quick to point out that the world seems to be ending anyway, so everything is worth the risk. Besides, if the world is destroyed, who will be around to complain about it?

The Ascended (Class System)
In Rift: Planes of Telara, players are one of the Ascended, a Telaran slain during the great Shade War and resurrected to combat the forces of Regulos. As an Ascended, players have access to special powers, the greatest of which is "Soul Attunement", the ability to commune with, and embrace, the souls of Telara's ancient fallen heroes.
The Soul Attunement system offers players nearly endless customization. In Rift: Planes of Telara, you’re encouraged to experiment with many combinations of souls and abilities to discover the path that’s right for you!
http://www.riftgame.com/img/classes/soultree.jpg
Souls
Players choose an Ascended Soul from one of the four callings (Warrior (http://www.riftgame.com/en/classes/warrior/index.php), Cleric (http://www.riftgame.com/en/classes/cleric/index.php), Mage (http://www.riftgame.com/en/classes/mage/index.php), and Rogue (http://www.riftgame.com/en/classes/rogue/index.php)) at character creation. These initial souls, which grow in power as they become more specialized, are flexible and have well-rounded abilities that make them great for both solo and group experiences. Players can later choose to augment, or even replace, embraced souls with other souls from within their calling. The process of enabling souls that players discover in their adventures is called Soul Attunement.
Players will also gain more specialized "Heroic Souls" that open up a number of new and exciting gameplay experiences, offering special achievements and rewards for players who discover them all.
The Soul Tree
Each attuned soul grants players access to a unique "Soul Tree," which contains all of the traits and abilities that a soul had mastered during its life. As your character levels up, you earn soul points that can be used to improve that tree's soul level, granting players access to even more powerful traits and abilities.
The Soul Tree — Branch Advancement
Players invest their soul points into the branches of the Soul Tree, picking and choosing the specific abilities and passive traits they desire. With each point spent, the Soul Tree increases in level, periodically unlocking new advancement options higher up the tree.
http://www.riftgame.com/img/classes/soultree-1.jpg
The Soul Tree — Root Advancement
Players automatically unlock new "root" abilities as the Soul Tree increases in level. If the branches represent the unique choices a player makes, the root represents the core power of the soul that all players have access to. Root abilities unlock quickly at first, but slow down as the tree’s soul-level increases.
http://www.riftgame.com/img/classes/soultree-2.jpg
Multiple Souls
As an Ascended grows in power, so does his or her ability to attune souls. Leveling a character will unlock the ability to attune additional souls. A maximum-level player will be able to attune up to three souls of their choosing!

INTERVIEWS
Weez on the Rift forums managed to play the game a little bit and even recorded some of it.
http://www.gamingweez.com/e3-blog/rift-planes-of-telara-questions-and-some-answers
I'll be giving a full recap on everything Rift later on but I wanted to provide here some answers to some of the questions we got today. Let me simply say that Rift... looks... amazing.
There's going to be MUCH MUCH more on Rift tomorrow (Wednesday) so I need YOUR QUESTIONS for the Devs! You can comment below, on our facebook or twitter and we'll get them to the devs. Do it!
Q: How will PvP work?
A: There'll be PvP servers in which people can PvP out on the open field. We'll have the usual duels and battleground/Scenario.
Q (SunriseNativ via Twitter):Will there be Druids and Half Elves?
A: While we can't confirm either, let's just say theres a good chance of seeing Druids and Elves in Rift.
Q: (Maxxy55 via Our site): In what way or ways are you going to implement quests? Are they going to have question marks over the head, and kill 10 xxx type or something new?
A: Questing is going to happen in different ways. Yes, there will be the go collect this, go talk to this guy and go kill X quests but then the Rift system will provide great expansion to how quests are done.
Q: (Europe via Rift Forums) how many souls do they plan to ship with?
A: We haven't fully finalize the number and don't want to let it be known yet but let's say there are going to be many many choices for you to explore.
Q: (Europe via Rift Forums) how customizable will the UI be?
A: Scott Hartsman: I have shipped 2 games that had a fully customizable UI. With Rift, we're still working on finalizing the default UI so we haven't discussed how that will be done but rest assured that the UI will be customizable.
Q: (Souper from Rift Forums) See if you can sneak something about crafting out. Will it be tied to the soul system? for example.
A: Crafting will NOT be tied to the soul system. The idea is to create a balance between raid gear and crafted gear so the usual player will have a bit of both. More on Crafting tomorrow
Q: (Souper from Rift Forums) How often can you switch around your classes?
A: The idea is for you to be able to switch anytime. You will have to travel to a city to do it but there's no cooldown as of right now. You must be out of combat of course, so there's no switching on the fly.
Q: (Souper from Rift Forums)
A: Per Scott Hartsman, Boxers.
THIS IS THE BETTER INTERVIEW
http://www.gamingweez.com/e3-blog/rift-planes-of-telara-q-a-2
So, as promised...GamingWeez brings you the 2nd Q&A dedicated entirely to Rift: Planes of Telara.
Before the Q&A and in order to build the suspense, I'd like to take a moment here to thank Abigail and the ENTIRE Trion Worlds team for their hospitality, kindness and overall awesomeness. Let me tell you, no other company treats fans like this.
So, a round of applause for Abigail and Trion Worlds please.
On to the Q&A:
Q: (From Krassus on our site) Have they discussed raiding size or difficulty ? What is their target raid size(s) and will they have difficult raids for people who are looking for more execution heavy raiding encounters
A: There will be instances at end-game with different sizes. 5, 10 and 20. There will also be "Heroic" style difficulty settings.
Q: (Raevin from Twitter) Half Elves? Defiant?
A: What we can say is that there are high elves as part of the Guardian faction. There's a 3rd race to be revealed and it might be elves, it might not, but something in the water says it's not half elves.
Q: (Will there be dual targeting in Rift?
A: At this time, this feature is not in and we can't say it won't be in at all but can't say it will either.
Q: How many starting classes are there?
A: 8x4 = 32
Q: Are there reactionary skills?
A: Yes, definitely. We have some reactionary abilities for different classes.
Q: Can you discuss the guild advancement system you spoke about previously?
A: I cannot. :)
Q: Death penalty, any information?
A: There wil be a death penalty but we're still trying to achieve the perfect balance to ensure people don't "Want" do die, but also not to penalize people too much for dying.
Q: In term of mechanics, will different classes have different mechanics?
A: Each of the 4 initial classes (Warrior, Mage, Rogue, Cleric) has a different mechanic. So then a Reaver and a Champion should have similar mechanic but play differently.
More Q&A and impressions tomorrow!

http://www.massively.com/2010/06/16/e3-2010-hands-on-with-rift-planes-of-telara/
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/rifttitle.jpg (http://www.riftgame.com/en/)
We've had our eye on Rift: Planes of Telara (http://www.riftgame.com/en/) for some time now, especially after getting a little face time with the game (http://www.massively.com/2010/04/26/massivelys-hands-on-look-at-rift-planes-of-telara/) back in April. Fortune smiles upon us all once more as Trion Worlds made the trek to E3 to showcase this gorgeous fantasy title. Shouldering our way to the front of the line -- hey, hey, I'm reporting here! -- we took the wheel of an interactive demo while the developers were kind enough to answer a few questions about Rift (http://www.massively.com/category/rift-planes-of-telara/).
Your very first decision in game will be to choose a faction: the Guardians or the Defiant. Both are tasked with saving a world under attack, although they each have their own approach and butt heads against the other in the process. The Guardians are blessed by the gods and are chosen to be their holy knights, while the Defiant take the anti-hero route and rely on their own technology to wage this war. The Defiant had created vast cities in the desert using their magical tech, but they were infiltrated by dragons and saw their great achievements wiped away, reducing them to desert wanderers. There are races unique to each faction, as well as races shared by both. We learned that the Defiant have access to both the Eth (http://www.riftgame.com/en/races/eth.php) (human) and Bahmi (http://www.riftgame.com/en/races/bahmi.php) (human/elemental) races.
We then moved on to classes, which lie within four basic "callings," as Rift likes to toss around. Choosing an initial calling -- Warrior, Cleric, Rogue and Mage -- locks you into that role, although you can go on to pick a specialized class within that calling, such as Blade Dancer or Reaver. Rift offers a spin on class selections by allowing players to mix-and-match elements of several classes by capturing souls and making your own unique blend. Like coffee, just with souls. You get your second soul at level 15 and your third at 30, but it's up to you to find and acquire these souls in your journey. The only restriction is that all of your souls have to fall under your calling, so you can't utilize a Warrior soul if you've chosen a Rogue calling.
Our dev chose to play a Warlock/Elementalist, with the Warlock aspect wielding death magic (think life taps and drains) while the Elementalist side provided direct attacks and pets. We picked a Champion instead, and enjoyed watching a master of blades at work.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/riftinterlude.jpg
Diving deeper into character builds, we learned that players will shape their destiny using Runes and Branches. Runes are core abilities that are unlocked the more you put points into them, while Branches offer a chance to tweak skills and abilities to your liking (think talent trees or mastery paths).
While finishing up creating our character, one thing became readily apparent: The artists have done a phenomenal job with Rift, as the character creation showcases many attractive choices.
We popped in the world as a newly-resurrected Defiant hero, overlooking a massive operation in the Shadowlands to recover lost technology and reclaim more heroes. The idea of souls is pretty crucial to your character, as not only have you been reborn from a spirit yanked from the soulstream, but you have come back with the ability to utilize other skilled souls from long ago.
As we cruised through the newbie experience, our character encountered several rifts (hey, just like the title of the game!). Rifts are tears in the fabric of reality that allow forces from other planes to pop through -- and this, of course, is not a good thing. The first tear we saw was a life rift, which roared into existence and affected the immediate environment. Rifts can not only change how the area looks and sounds, but transform wandering creatures into new monstrosities.
The cool thing is that rifts do more than just make the world appear dynamic -- you can jump into one and battle your way to the end like a bonus stage, in search of special rewards. Rifts come in various sizes, such as major and minor, which impact how long these bonus stages last. Multiple people can enter a rift, like a public quest, and share the loot based on contribution. There are rifts for each of the elements with a corresponding villain: life, death, air, fire, earth and water. Like lightning, you can't expect a rift to open up in the same spot twice, or predict which type of rift will open when you do find one.
The world isn't all foreign to the experienced MMO gamer, as we moved on to the initial Defiant base and discovered staple MMO services: crafting, auction house, banks and quests. You have to be on your toes in these bases, however, as they're not immune to dynamic events flaring up. For example, a tech might botch using a device, and end up making a small rift right inside the base itself unleashing water elementals everywhere.

Following the newbie zone, the world expands exponentially. For fans of PvP, you'll start to encounter areas and zones where open PvP is the name of the game -- but these should be avoidable by those who desire it. Most of the world is seamless when you run around, although there are special instances that offer 5-man content and raid-level content.
Explorer types are rewarded with experience for discovering new areas, as well as a collection system. Unfortunately, the devs couldn't share much about collections and crafting at this time. They also have no plans to add any roleplay-specific systems.
Trion Worlds is pouring a lot of effort into creating a world full of interesting lore, a fairly unique class creation system and the "keep you on your toes" excitement of rifts. Hopefully we'll get to look at the Guardian faction in the future and see what else we can pry out of this title to pass on to you!

We Just Played Rift: Planes of Telara (at E3 2010)
http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6266407/we-just-played-rift-planes-of-telara-at-e3-2010
If this loud, hot, video-game-filled convention center doesn't mean that it's E3 2010, then it must be like some kind of loud, hot, video-game-filled dream. On an entirely unrelated note, we just took an updated look at Rift: Planes of Telara, the upcoming fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game from Trion Worlds. As we've mentioned in our previous coverage, Rift will take place on the shattered planet of Telara, a world that has literally been smashed to pieces by the machinations of a group of evil ancient dragons. While the game has lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of lore, backstory, and funny names for things, the bottom line is that the game will feature a lot of dynamically generated content that should offer you lots of different things to do while encouraging (but not forcing) you to play well with others.
We started our session by creating a new character from the game's "defiant" faction. The game will have two different factions that will oppose each other in player-versus-player combat, and each will have three different playable humanoid races with different racial abilities, off-color skin, and nonstandard fantasy names (don't look for any elves or orcs here). The two defiant races available at E3 are the ethians, human-looking beings who are allegedly descended from the sorcerer kings who created Telara; and bahmi, a race of half-human, half-elemental beings. After choosing to play as a bahmi character, we then moved on to profession.
http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/images/2010/116/995594_20100427_embed001.jpg (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/riftplanesoftelara/images/6266407/1/?path=2010%2F116%2F995594_20100427_embed001.jpg)
Rift will feature four basic character callings: warrior, rogue, healer, and wizard. But it will have multiple character professions along these lines, including different base flavors of each. For instance, the inquisitor, the class we picked, will be a spellcaster with some healing abilities but specialized in dealing damage. Our level-one bahmi inquisitor started off in humble robes carrying a quarterstaff in a dark, moonlit purple forest--a limbo world not of Telara that serves as the game's tutorial area. We were given a simple quest by a clearly labeled quest giver to go kill some bugs--something we had little trouble with between zapping it with our introductory damage spell and toggling on auto-attack to repeatedly strike the pests with our staff.
Being familiar with games like World of Warcraft, EverQuest, and all the rest, we could see where this was headed, so we opted to switch back to a hands-off demo to watch a higher-level character (a level-21 inquisitor) take on a new adventure. Watching a higher-level character in action gave us a chance to see the game's modified "multiclass" system, which has been radically overhauled since last year's E3. If you recall, at last year's E3, Telara was presented as a game that would let you freely change classes between totally unrelated professions and advance in each. That system has been revised to instead let each base calling have three different skill specializations, each of which is a functionally complete character profession on its own. For instance, cleric-class characters may choose from both healer and inquisitor skills (as well as skills from a third, as-yet-unnamed cleric subclass) to create a cleric character to their own personal tastes. As a matter of fact, as long as your character invests the time, training, and cost of in-game currency to unlock your desired skills from each of the three subclasses, you can mix and match them at will. You can even save your favorite skill loadouts to templates that you bring with you to raids, PVP, and other situations.
We then watched the inquisitor take on an interdimensional tear--a glowing anomaly floating in the air that randomly spawns throughout the world and can be activated to start a dimensional invasion from a different plane that you and other players must fight. The first tear was an invasion from the plane of life and included the same sort of green, plantlike critters we saw in our last preview. The second such encounter was a "rift," another sort of interdimensional portal that will, if left untended, erupt by itself into its own invasion. This rift was from the plane of death and summoned numerous undead soldiers into battle. Thankfully, at this point, the battle was joined by other players, so our inquisitor character primarily held back and blasted the fiends from a distance. As we've mentioned previously, both tears and rifts act as opportunities for players to play Rift's social quests--an evolved version of Warhammer Online's public quests to which all players in an area may contribute without having to join a formal group. These social quests will continuously spawn waves of enemies (and if you're fast enough to defeat them, an extra bonus wave or two, as well) that you and anyone in the area must defeat. Participating in these social quests is intended to be attractive to players because they spawn new enemies to fight, as well as bonus environmental items to aid in battle (in the case of the death rift, gray stone urns which, when clicked on, temporarily increased our character's damage output) and successively better loot with each continuing wave.

Rift: Planes of Telara's unorthodox approaches to generating playable content and player grouping are absolutely steps taken in a different direction from what you'd usually expect in such a game. It's scheduled to launch next year.

This is from the last 3 days of IRC with developers. They logged in to the chat while at E3. Got 2 questions in, voot voot.
http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/thread-703-post-6482.html#pid6482
Q: <@Ciovala> Any plans for a Guardians video in the near future, Chris?
A: <+Chris_E310>Ciovala - we will have a Guardians video coming in the future
Q: <Ather> hartsman.. can you say if its possible to create a 'build' akin to the eq1 beastlord with souls? ie melee based pet class?
A: <+hartsman> Ather -- I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any such thing, though I will say that I'd be absolutely shocked if you couldn't
Q: <Phoenix_79> Why all the Defiant love? Us guardian fans are left in the dark here =)
A: <+hartsman> Phoe - The guardians will absolutely be getting their time in the sun. Or the divine light, as appropriate.
Q: <Zinn> Scott, Will there be dual targeting like Vanguard. Where we have a defensive and offensive target at the same time.
A: <+hartsman> Zinn -- we've talked about a few different ways of doing multi target, not 100% positive yet on the best way for us
Q: <Dosi> Will US/Euro players be able to play on the same servers ?
A:<+hartsman> Dosi -- I can't speak for publishing and the biz relationships that we have (and will continue to develop) but its my strong preference that yes, people will be able to do that.
Q: <Osho> Do the lore includes gnomes as race or as creatures ?^
A: <+MorganLockhart> We do not have gnomes currently. But we have a few different gnome fans, so who knows for the future http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <Kartys> MorganLockhart: The player is described as a really storm soul that comes back. Some of the original class creators Talos Roda for example sounds like a strong soul. Can we expect NPC's of some of them?
A: <+MorganLockhart> Kartys, there are Ascended NPCs for sure. Asha is an Ascended
Q: <Bellatrix> I have a question. Will we ever meet any of the Dragonslayer Covenant other than Asha?
A: <+MorganLockhart> Definitely. Even though the Defiants broke off from them (Orphiel, BTW, is also from the DC), their faction still exists
Q: <@Ciovala> morgan, are you doing things to get us involved without necessarily having to do a 3 paragraph 'word dump' at the NPCs?
A: <+MorganLockhart> Ciovala, I think visual storytelling is very important for MMOs
Q: <Kartys> Any specific favorite character you have helped create?
A: <+MorganLockhart> Kartys, probably Asha. She is definitely my baby
Q: <Myrdynn> wants to know something about crafting
A: <+ChrisJunior> Awesome info about the crafting system will have to wait a bit...I wouldn't want to spoil any fun for our incredible crafting team http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <Faelor> Chris - Defiant or Guardian, you have 10 seconds. Go!
A: <+ChrisJunior> Defiant
Q: <RIRCGuest357> ChrisJunior, will their be some time of Tome of Knowledge, achievement or tracking system for your accomplishements? I always like seeing how many times I killed a certain mob, or died on this or that.
A: <+ChrisJunior> Vague answer...but there are definitely forms of tracking tools in game for accomplishments http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <lepericon> what class do u play? lol
A: <+ChrisJunior> Lepericon: the beauty of our class system. I don't have to have a favorite, cause I can combine them however I see fit http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <@Ciovala> well, can't quite combine however you see fit since it's restricted within your calling, right?
A: <+ChrisJunior> Ciovala: Correct, but with the current layout that we are working in, we still have a lot of souls that slightly cross calling boundaries
Q: <Bellatrix> Well, whether it's the poll or groups, Defiant seem to be outnumbering Guardians :\ That's a shame.
A: <+ChrisJunior> Bellatrix: We actually had a bunch of Defaint/Guardian tshirts made up for the office. Ends up at the end of the day, we're pretty much split 50/50 at our studio http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <Kartys> ChrisJunior what are some of your credits to the game. Some of the things you have been instrumental in
A: <+ChrisJunior> Kartys: Class Design, Itemization, PvP
Q: <%Dale> ChrisJunior: What will be the other means of transportation except for mounts. Teleport? Flight?
A: <+ChrisJunior> Dale: I hear players can walk...and run!
^^ lololol
Q: <Zinn> Chris, Can we get a screenshot of some in game maps? Particularly the world map.
A: <+ChrisJunior> The world map is soooo awesome. So awesome, that screenshots cannot contain them!
Random statment
<+SimonFfinch> It's amazing. I have been to a lot of E3 but the reaction to Rift is not something I have seen before
<DSWBeef> positive i hope
<+SimonFfinch> Totally positive. A constant crowd
Q: <Ather> Simon, can you talk a little about music? Will you be putting up a few mp3's for us to check out?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @ather that is a great idea. I'll bring it up when I get back to the office
Q: <Elladar> What class do you play??
A: <+SimonFfinch> @elladar Wouldn't you like to know http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Q: <lepericon> SimonFfinch will there be racials that every race will have?
A: <+SimonFfinch> Yes there are racial abilitis both passive and active
Q: <Osho> Simon, is little raid content also available before we hit lv50 ?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @osho yes. there is quite a lot in fact
Q: <Phoenix_79> Simon what has been your favorite part of the project so far in your role?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @phoenix_79 My favorite thing is working with a team that all believes in what they are doing and puts in the passion and love that it takes to make a game of this quality
Q: <Kartys> SimonFfinch with three souls the soul points will obviously be spread out. How are you going about making sure that spread out setup are viable instead of just focus mainly on one tree?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @kartys that great thing we are finding is that we don't actually have to stress about that as much as we thought. As you will be able to make adjustments if you don't like how your class has ended up
Q: <Raive> SimonFfinch, I'm not sure if this was touched basis on since I was late but, "If you had to draw a line, what kind of balancing of content are you anticipating? Such as a 30/50/20 solo/group/raid or...?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @raive we are still working on that to find the best balance. We certainly like to drive players together to play and you will be able to do that even if you are not actually in a group.
Q: <Kartys> SimonFfinch obviously the soul system is something that is really going to make Rift, how did the idea come about and how do you think it will effect the MMO market
A: <+SimonFfinch> @kartys the idea developed over time as we played the game and discovered what was fun. I am as interested as you are in how it will effect the market
Q: <Skorne> Simon I know you guys won't have player housing for launch, is it something you've discussed would you like to add it in future?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @skorne all I can tell you right now is I am afan of player housing http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Q: <Phoenix_79> SimonFfinch, do you worry with the ease of adjusting their class the community may abuse the system and require a player to adjust to a particular set up? Is there anything in place to prevent this type of behavior?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @phoenix Obviously we are still polishing the system but this is something we think about and we will be making sure that the system cannot be abused
Q: <lepericon> SimonFfinch u guys going to be at anyother Gaming Convetions this year?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @lepericon Yes I am not sure off the top off my head which ones though
Q: <Arithion> SimonFfinch we hope you still love your job after being fed to the wolves (us)
A: <+SimonFfinch> we are making this game for you. I want you to love it as much as I do. So long as you are not as vicious as the wolves in Telara http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Q: <Europe> SimonFfinch: are you guys planning expansions from day 1?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @europe yes
Q: <Apoth> Simon my last question can you give us any details on PVP system will there be progression in PVP and more importantly will PVP take place in battlegrounds or in seperate PVP zones like DAOC's RVR?
A: <+SimonFfinch> @Apoth We are planning to lunch with PVP is prolly all I am allowed to say right now. I will say it is not restricted to battle grounds though
Q: <Raive> BrianClarke, what artwork have you worked on in the past? Like games...so I can pull up your profile?
A: <+BrianClarke> Last game I worked on was Warhammer
Q: <Elladar> Dear Brian whos idea was it to implement tentacles in Death Rift opening?
A: <+BrianClarke> Me actually @Elladar
Q: <Zinn> Brian are we going to see some shortie races like Dorfs, oompaloompa or Goblins? and do you hate half Elves like the rest of us?
A: <+BrianClarke> I think Elves are interesting enough in their own way. We can make them interesting I'm not worried.
Q: <Europe> BrianClarke: We can expect to see water rifts...underwater?
A: <+BrianClarke> We would like to try and put rifts in as many cool places as possible
Q: <souper> BrianClarke: are cities and towns being designed to look life-like or to-scale in terms of size?
A: <+BrianClarke> When we build towns we really try to make it something that works for the players if making a huge city doesn't work and you have a ton of it not being used I think it works to cut it back to make it something fun
Q: <Elladar> Brian. Who do you support? Guardians or Defiant?? :o
A: <+BrianClarke> I support both
Q: <souper> BrianClarke: When designing PvP zones what do you take into consideration? http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
A: <+BrianClarke> When I design a PvP zone (not specific to any game) I want to make sure if flows well for both sides. You don't want to give one and edge over another but you have to keep in mind the content going on
Q: <@Ciovala> belated hi, Brian. Have you tried to give the world a real sense of scale? I know devs dont always want to leave the world empty...but sometimes you just want to be able to explore and find that spot no one else has found
A: <+BrianClarke> for scale we have our own feelings on it and we really want to make something our own. We are going for more realistic but something interesting.
Q: <Europe> BrianClarke: Will we see lots of playing with lights and shading to create moods? For example, strangely colored skies giving a weird atmosphere to ominous areas?
A: <+BrianClarke> We already do play with lighting and sky each zone will have something interesting to see and the day night cycle is fully dynamic. The sun and shadows move and we use them to make interesting moods
Q: <Hanlo> Brian, did you work on the rift artwork? If so, which plane was your favorite to make?
A: <+BrianClarke> There was a question about what rift I liked... I have worked (and still am) on all 6 rifts. So far the most fun has been death but I have a great time with each of them.
Q: <Faelor> BrianClarke - are there any fantasy artists that have inspired you over the years? Parkinson, Frazetta, Lockwood, etc?
A: <+BrianClarke> Albreicht Durer is one of my favorite artists.
Q: <Arithion> Russ_Brown Will the graphics engine utilize SLI or Crossfire? Will it utilize dual core CPU's?
A: <+Russ_Brown> SLI support yes. dual core yes
Q: <souper> Russ_Brown will we be getting any souls via PvP or is it primarily a PvE thing?
A: <+Russ_Brown> @souper. not finalized but I definately want too
Q: <Phoenix_79> Can you throw a little Guardian info our way? We have heard and seen a lot of Defiant stuff. How about a little taste of what's to come?
A: <+Russ_Brown> Guardian info. yeah i can do that. Guardian are chosen of the gods. Why are the chosen by the gods? Because they are bad asses. They are the gods first round draft picks
Q: <MattGraham> Russ_Brown Will there be solid endgame PvE at launch? I ask this because the lack of endgame PvE at launch has been the downfall of many recent MMOs.
A: <+Russ_Brown> @matt yes, definately,
Q: <Ayonyx> can I comepletely ignore PvE and level exclusively through PvP?
A: <+Russ_Brown> You will have to do some pve but then you will be able to level with pvp
Q: <Zinn> Russ, how do you plan to make combat complex, interactive
and fun. Are there reactionary (after an evade), positional and chain attacks.
A: <+Russ_Brown> @zinn, reactionaries, yup. one of guardian classes is about reactionaries. some positional and chain attacks. also proc triggers
Q: <souper> Russ_Brown : if you saw all of your co-workers online, vulnerable, and alone, who would you gank first? (was that too evil a question? http://www.telaracentral.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
A: <+Russ_Brown> @souper I always gank Simon FFinch.
Q: <RIRCGuest444> Russ, will there be a black (exchange) market between defiant and guardian players or is it completely independent ?
A: <+Russ_Brown> @rirc good idea. wasn't planning on it will see if we can get that in
Q: <Ayonyx> Russ_Brown: do you have any information on combat depth: is it simply tab-target button mashing or is there something more to it
A: <+Russ_Brown> @Ayonyx. we will have positionals, chains, GTAOE's, PBAOEs, and anything else to make a avatar based mmo combat more complex. because of the soul system we can make some classes more challenging to play

http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/06/17/rift-planes-of-telara-s-dynamic-content-sets-it-apart.aspx
Not many companies are trying to make a traditional subscription-based high fantasy PC MMORPG any more, but new developer/publisher Trion Worlds is doing just that with Rift – and they might just pull it off if the game’s solid E3 showing is any indication.
Rift cribs much of its design from familiar sources. MMO players will be right at home with its auto-attack-with-ability-buttons combat and high fantasy setting. Trion is banking on the game’s dynamic content system to differentiate it from the pack. Rifts are dynamically generated all the time, putting the world of Telara under siege by murderous forces from the elemental planes.
Trion’s unique technology allows it to dynamically stream randomly generated rifts wherever it wants. These events look similar to Warhammer Online’s public quests, with stages being completed as players accomplish objectives and loot given out at the end based on participation. The difference is that they randomly pull content from the huge bank of possibilities that Trion plans to have ready for launch. One fire rift, for example, will be unique from another fire rift – and the several elemental planes are all radically different from each other.
These rifts are more than loot bags that players run around popping. They alter the landscape and monsters around them, twisting animal, vegetable, and mineral with their chaotic forces. There will be consequences to not closing them, though Trion is still developing that portion of the feature and isn’t sharing details yet. It’s probably a safe bet to assume that the dynamic content generation tech behind the rifts will be put to as much use as Trion can squeeze out of it.
Rift’s character progression is also worthy of note. Though it looks similar to World of Warcraft’s talents at first glance, the “heroic souls” system is much more interesting. At creation, characters choose a calling: mage, cleric, warrior, or rogue. Within this archetype, two choices of profession are available. For instance, a rogue could choose to be a blademaster or a ranger. This determines the skill tree you initially have access to. The upper part looks like a WoW tree, with skills leading to other skills and a gated progression depending on how many points you dump into it overall. Below, a set of core active abilities unlocks automatically, also based on your investment in the tree. All rangers, for instance, will have the basic bow-shooting abilities they need to fulfill their core role. These “roots” of the tree also form your basic skill progression; all ability acquirement is through the heroic soul system.
As you complete quests, kill mobs, and generally do your MMORPG thing, you collect heroic souls. Each one of these is a whole new skill tree to explore. At levels 15 and 30, you gain the ability to equip a second and third tree concurrently, so long as they're compatible with your calling. Imagine, for instance, having an entirely new talent tree drop when you finally kill the Lich King. While you can’t choose them on the fly, you’ll be able to save tree loadouts and point assignments to some extent – Trion gave the example of being able to flip between your raiding and PvP skillsets at town, even though they may use entirely different souls.
A neat dynamic content generation system and cool character progression do not a complete MMO make, but they do form a good foundation. Trion still has a lot of questions to answer about social features, combat diversity and character class interaction, and endgame viability. For now, though, it’s nice to see a premium MMO with potential.

The only thing we know (that they've told us) is there will be 5 man, 10 man, 20 man content and some sort of "heroic" mode.

Nothing really new, but it's a neat video that gives a breakdown of the game. Integrates the standard E3 demo with in-game clips.
The only thing that is "new" is "Warzones", which appears to be what they are calling Battlegrounds/Scenarios.
