Everquest 2 had flying carpets. Before the 1st EQ2 expansion came out, they were damn near impossible to get because of the cost. HA gained some internets fame due to the availabilty of them.

Then of course in the 1st EQ2 expansion, everyone could get a flying carpet by doing a minimal group quest, which was exploitable.

Oh, and imagine instead of gryphons, bats, and dragonhawks; All Flight Point mounts were flying carpets. Aladdin much?
